Born in England, and graduating from the University of London, Holton has had a diverse career, including working as a Town Planner, a Geologist in East Africa and Australia, a senior manager in IT for BHP and Woodside in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth and subsequently Director of IT Consulting with Ernst and Young. Holton's background was to become a great platform to launch his carer as a professional artist.
Holton’s Perth studio is situated in the serene eastern hills of Perth, Western Australia; with is wife, Waree, he also has an arts guesthouse in NE Thailand where he teaches and paints.
After studying for a Diploma of Art at the prestigious Claremont School of Art, Perth, Holton established his professional artistic career in 1994 with his first solo exhibition of Pilbara landscapes at Woodside Petroleum in Perth and Karratha, Western Australia.
Holton interprets the diversity and beauty of Australian landscapes through his modern analysis of impressionism. In his recent works Holton juxtaposes his strikingly vivid landscapes with whimsical, dreamlike Chagall-esque figures, through which we feel a sense of emotion which is separate from his landscape although encapsulated within it. “Characteristically these works communicate to people in different ways as they interpret them from the source of their own experience and emotions.” states Holton.
His work is always innovative, and with an enthusiasm and passion for art he concurrently develops several themes both painterly and conceptual, with characteristic movement, colour and wit. Holton’s paintings are in acrylic and oil on canvas or cotton rag paper, incorporating a wide range of techniques from rough brushing, in which he drags paint across the canvas, to the glow of multiple translucent glazes.
He is continually experimenting and developing new ideas so that his work covers a wide range of subject matter and techniques: include landscapes and townscapes which capture the essence of Western Australia, figurative works, nudes and flower studies.
Holton’s influences include Lloyd Rees, Van Gogh, Bonnard, Klimt, the Fauves, Lucian Freud, Arthur Boyd, John Perceval, Brett Whitely, Marc Chagall, Garry Shead, Fred Williams, Stanley Spencer and Paula Rego.
His artwork is represented in many private and public collections throughout Australia and internationally. Holton has had many successful annual exhibitions at galleries in Perth, Broome, Yallingup, Mandurah, Adelaide, Melbourne, Cairns, UK and the USA. His paintings have been used in several books, CDs and magazines for publishers including the Australian Broadcasting Commission, Michigan University Press, the New York Art Guide and Palette Magazine.
In March 1995 he established the first Internet art gallery in Australia, at www.peach.asn.au. The orignial gallery still exists but recently it has has been superseded by jeremyholton.com which this is designed to display lovely images on tablets and smart phones as will ask desktops, TVs etc.
